More Than Recovery — A Competitive Edge
Whether you’re training for your next marathon, competing on weekends, or just trying to stay active without breaking down, sports massage is one of the most powerful tools available to improve performance, speed recovery, and keep your body functioning at its best.
At Natural Balance in Norwest, our sports massage therapists have worked with amateur and elite athletes across cycling, running, triathlon, rugby, swimming, and more. We understand the specific physical demands of your sport — and how to prepare your body for them, recover from them, and protect against the injuries they cause.

Understanding The
Benefits of Sports massage
- ACCELERATED RECOVERY Intense training creates microscopic damage to muscle fibres, and accumulates metabolic waste products like lactic acid that cause soreness and fatigue. Sports massage dramatically increases blood and lymphatic circulation, flushing these waste products from the tissue and delivering the oxygen and nutrients needed for faster repair. What might take 4–5 days to recover from naturally can be reduced to 1–2 days with targeted post-training massage.
- IMPROVED RANGE OF MOTION & FLEXIBILITY Hours of training leave muscles chronically shortened and tight, which limits movement efficiency and increases injury risk. Regular sports massage — combined with our assisted stretching programs — restores muscle length, improves joint mobility, and allows your body to move through its full range of motion. More mobility means more power, better technique, and fewer compensation injuries.
- INJURY PREVENTION Most sports injuries don't come out of nowhere. They develop from muscular imbalances, accumulated tightness, and movement restrictions that eventually reach a tipping point under load. Sports massage identifies these imbalances early and addresses them before they become injuries. This is why smart athletes make massage a regular part of their training program, not just something they seek out after they're already hurt.
- ENHANCED PERFORMANCE A body that moves freely, recovers quickly, and is free from compensatory tension simply performs better. Pre-event sports massage activates circulation, reduces muscle stiffness, and primes the neuromuscular system for activity. Regular maintenance massage keeps your body in optimal condition throughout your training season.
- PAIN REDUCTION Overuse injuries, muscle cramps, and training-related pain are significantly reduced with regular sports massage. By addressing trigger points, muscle spasms, and restricted areas before they escalate, we help you train consistently without the interruptions caused by pain-related setbacks.

When to get a Sports Massage
Pre-Sports
48–72 hours before competition, sports massage activates circulation, reduces muscle stiffness, and prepares the neuromuscular system. On event day, lighter activation work can be beneficial for warm-up without causing muscle fatigue.
Maintenance
Regular weekly or fortnightly maintenance massage during a training block keeps muscular tension under control, prevents imbalances from developing, and allows you to sustain higher training loads without breaking down.
Post Event
Within 24–48 hours after an event or hard training block, deep tissue sports massage clears metabolic waste, reduces DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), and begins restoring normal muscle function. Recovery that would otherwise take 5–7 days can be compressed significantly.
Injury Rehabilitation
Following a soft tissue injury, targeted sports massage accelerates the healing process, ensures scar tissue forms correctly, and restores range of motion during recovery — helping you return to sport faster and with reduced re-injury risk.
